Join us for this compelling look at the motivations and approaches of noted editorial cartoonists and their ongoing impact on public perception.

Elaine K. Miller, Ph.D., will discuss the issue of gender in visual satire and focus on the representation of such high-profile, female politicians as Hillary Rodham Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro, among others. Elaine K. Miller is Professor Emeritus of Women’s Studies at the State University of New York, College at Brockport. She is the author of such outstanding books and videos as Framing Hillary: Gender Identity in Editorial Cartoons and Trailblazer: The Editorial Cartoons of Etta Hulme.

An A Cappella Evening with Quintessential

Step back in time and enjoy songs from campaign eras past and present, performed with wit and whimsy by Quintessential, a Berkshire-based ensemble of a cappella singers. Tenors Al Thorp, Jay Wise and Jim McMenamy, and bass/baritones John Miner and David Anderegg are back by popular demand, and will perform in the Museum galleries.

Politics Unusual:
An Evening with Alan Chartock

Enjoy an evening with Dr. Alan Chartock, who will share his perspectives on the political playing field—both nationally and in the region—during this unpredictable election year. Alan Chartock is the President and CEO of WAMC /Northeast Public Radio. A Professor Emeritus at the University at Albany, he is the executive publisher of the Legislative Gazette, the newspaper of New York State government, and hosts Capitol Connection, a weekly series heard on public radio. Dr. Chartock also appears regularly on such WAMC radio programs as The Media Project and Midday Magazine, and writes syndicated columns about politics in our world.

Needlepoint Workshop:
Painting with Thread: Needlepoint Basics and Beyond

Create a masterpiece with colored threads! Expert needlepoint artist Herbert Leiman will teach the techniques and nuances of needlepoint and inspire new interest in this meditative art form. The workshop will be held in the Museum’s beautifully appointed Linwood House.

A kit including your materials for the class will be available in the Museum Store at a discount; a list of necessary supplies is also available upon request. Bring lunch; we’ll provide beverages and snacks. Please preregister by July 29.

Political Cartoons:
A History of Visual Satire

Illustrator/historian Roy Schlemme will trace the evolution of political cartooning— a compelling form of visual journalism that has shaped public opinion since the mid-19th century. From Thomas Nast to Steve Brodner and David Levine, this lively look at the time-honored art of political satire will offer vibrant reflections on our most prominent leaders and their legacies.

Roy Schlemme is a cartoonist and illustrator whose books include Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and Skewed Views: A Cartoon Odyssey for the Terminally Eccentric.

Filmmaker Gail Levin:
Animating The Naked Campaign

An Emmy Award-winning producer and director of television and film, Gail Levin will join us to discuss her collaboration with Steve Brodner, America’s foremost political illustrator. Ms. Levin’s online films, which are currently seen on The New Yorker’s Web site and on YouTube, bring Brodner’s drawings and commentary to life for viewers around the globe. Gail Levin is also the producer and director of Marilyn Monroe: Still Life and James Dean: Sense Memories, created for the PBS American Masters series.

The Naked Campaign:
An Evening with Steve Brodner

Today’s most prominent satirical illustrator, Steve Brodner has created caricatures of noted popular and political figures for nearly every major American publication. The artist will speak about his intensive involvement in the 2008 Presidential process and offer wry, humorous observations on the candidates and their campaigns—from primary season to the political conventions. Steve Brodner’s drawings and videos for The Naked Campaign appear weekly in The New Yorker and on the Internet.

In Full Bloom: Artists Design Garden Gates

Garden gates are the quintessential element of an ideal garden and provide symbolic entry into a world of color and aesthetic beauty. Plain, fancy, white, polychrome, and constructed of a myriad of materials, a special installation of a stunning variety of garden gates designed by artist’s will complement the beautiful grounds at the Norman Rockwell Museum this season. Join us for a festive outdoor exhibition opening! Stephanie Bergman, Director of Education for the Housatonic River Museum, will lead a tour of the Museum’s pastoral Housatonic River frontage at 3 p.m. Awards will be announced at 4 p.m. Free with Museum admission; members free.

Writing Workshop: Point of View with Vivian Dorsel

It all depends on how you look at it—and on who’s doing the looking. Characterization, setting, tone, style, and even the details of plot can change, depending on the point of view from which a story is told. Join author Vivian Dorsel to discover the impact pointof- view can have on your work. In this workshop, fiction and creative nonfiction writers will learn techniques that lead to a greater understanding of the writing process.

Vivian Dorsel is the founder of Ledgetop Publishing and editor of the literary annual, upstreet. She holds an MFA in Fiction Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and has conducted classes for writers of all ages and skill levels.

The New Yorker’s official political illustrator for the 2008 presidential campaign, Steve Brodner is an award-winning commentator and visual humorist whose imagery has appeared in Esquire, The New York Times, New York, Mother Jones, The Nation, National Lampoon, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, The Washington Post, and The Village Voice. Life After Black: The Visual
Journals of Barron Storey

An illustrator, graphic novelist, and noted educator, Barron Storey has created award-winning artworks for the covers and pages of Time, National Geographic, Saturday Review, and The Sandman: Endless Nights among others. The artist’s paintings are held in the collections of the National Air and Space Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, and the National Portrait Gallery, and his published journals include Life After Black and Marat/Sade Journals.

Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist

Join us for a special screening of this in-depth documentary on Will Eisner, "the godfather of the American comic book." Filmmakers Andrew D. Cooke and Jon B. Cooke will be with us to discuss their insightful film about one of the greatest innovators in the history of the art form.

The creator of A Contract with God and The Spirit, Will Eisner considered himself "a graphic witness reporting on life, death, heartbreak, and the never ending struggle to prevail." From the early days of comic books in the 1930s through six revolutionary decades, he stretched the boundaries and advocated more sophisticated storytelling techniques, and then reinvented himself as the architect of the graphic novel format.

Through interviews with such notable figures as Kurt Vonnegut, Michael Chabon, Frank Miller, Jules Feiffer and Art Spiegelman, Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist provides us with an intimate look at this comic book master, who had an undeniable influence on the medium. Spend some time getting to know Charles Butler, New York City attorney and owner of Linwood, our gracious Berkshire Cottage overlooking the Housatonic River. Mr. Butler will greet you in the library to share stories of his life and times and introduce you to the household staff. Find out if he makes the 3:10 train to New York! Participants are invited to join him for refreshments in the parlor after the program, which brings the owner of this 1859 home to life.

Thought Bubbles: Make Your Graphic Novel POP!

Blend the art of writing, drawing, and storyboarding in this exciting workshop for teens exploring the process of creating a graphic novel. Educator and gifted graphic novelist, Tim Callahan, will guide young cartoonists through the process of moving an idea from first frame to finished comic book. Tim Callahan is the author and illustrator of Teenagers from the Future and other stories.

Discover the roots of American illustration in this lively series of informal talks with Norman Rockwell Museum curator Charles Sable. The origins of pictorial communication from prehistory to the twentieth century will be explored, offering insights into the intersecting roles of the artist, economics, and culture. The examination of nineteenth and twentieth visual culture will culminate in the career of legendary American illustrator, Norman Rockwell. Charles Sable has been a distinguished curator and museum educator for more than twenty years.

Adult Writing Workshop: 99 Ways to Tell a Story! How to Write a Graphic Novel

Sharpen your pencils and get ready to think outside the box! Illustrator Matt Madden, the author and illustrator of 99 Ways to Tell a Story, will lead engaging exercises in literary and artistic style that will inspire the graphic novelist in you. Point of view, personal narration, and the interplay of pictures and words will be explored during this exciting interactive program. Materials will be provided.

Matt Madden is a New York-based cartoonist and illustrator who teaches comic art and drawing at the School of Visual Arts. His recent books include 99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises in Style and A Fine Mess, an anthology. He has recently completed a comics textbook called Drawing Words and Writing Pictures with his wife and fellow artist, Jessica Abel. The Business of Art: Self-Publishing
Your Comics

Join illustrator Alec Longstreth for this special focus on the business of comics! Ways to succeed in cartooning and self-publishing will be the subject of this lively session, which will offer inside information on production, distribution, promotion, and the importance of networking. Aspiring artist or those who are new to the genre are welcome. Participants are invited to bring a portfolio for review.

Alex Longstreth is an experienced self-publisher and the winner of the 2005 Ignatz Award for an Outstanding Minicomic. He is currently working Basewood, his first graphic novel, and his illustrations have been commissioned by such noted clients as Nickelodeon, National Geographic for Kids, and Scholastic among others.

Presidential Performance George Washington: Our Nation’s First President

Explore the roots of American government with George Washington, who swore to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution” as the first United States President on April 30, 1789. This riveting first-person performance will celebrate the life, times, struggles, and triumphs of this historic national figure in the Museum’s galleries, surrounded by Norman Rockwell’s paintings of American presidents and candidates. With more than ten years experience portraying George Washington, actor Carl Closs invites your reflection on a bygone era.

Comics and Cartooning

Create your own comics during this exciting workshop series with talented author and illustrator Marek Bennett. Lively, engaging art activities and gallery experiences will inspire experimentation with the language of comics through the introduction of the use of character, plot, and setting; task sequencing; comic dialogue; book building, and much more.

Art Comes Alive! Family Day: Creating Cartoons and Comics

We had a capacity crowd this Saturday at the Norman Rockwell Museum for our whirlwind overview of Comics basics. Museum visitors enjoyed a tour of the LitGraphic exhibit hosted by Melinda Georgeson, then we got right down to business in the downstairs classroom.
