Art Talk:
Illustration in the 1950's

Join illustrator Murray Tinkelman as he takes you for a quick ride through American illustration from the 1950s. From the Beat Generation to the increasing number of television sets found in people’s homes, the Fifties were a decade of transition from traditional post-World War II ideas to the social unrest of the 1960s. Mr. Tinkelman will explore the cultural shifts of 1950s America through a diverse collection of images, created by illustrators working throughout the decade. Free with Museum admission.

Over the Top: The Illustrated Posters of World War I

A striking series of illustrated posters can be credited as making an important and lasting contribution to America’s successful war effort during World War I. With bold, colorful images and terse commands, they encouraged citizens to join the armed forces, contribute to the Red Cross, and buy war bonds. As rendered by such leading artists as James Montgomery Flagg, Howard Chandler Christy, and J.C. Leyendecker, these persuasive images appealed to Americans’ sense of patriotism, self-preservation, and traditional morality.

Join us for an inspiring evening honoring some of the world’s premier illustrators, and our nation’s brave soldiers, past and present. Commentary begins at 6:30 p.m. with Thomas Leffingwell Pulling, whose magnificent collection of posters made this exhibition possible. Free for Museum members; $15 non-members.
